Gov’t Releases Payment For 2025 KCSE, KJSEA Examiner Allowances

Thousands of teachers who took the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) examinations have begun to get their long-awaited rewards after the government approved funding to settle outstanding arrears.

On Thursday, July 9, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba revealed that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has released the remaining marking allowances to examiners’ bank accounts.

The payments come after the National Treasury released Ksh1.5 billion on July 7, which was set aside to clear outstanding arrears owing to teachers and other professionals contracted for the 2025 national tests.

“We are pleased to inform all examiners who participated in the marking of the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination that the balance of their marking allowances has been disbursed to their respective accounts by the Kenya National Examinations Council,” Ogamba said in a statement.

The announcement brings to an end months of uncertainty among thousands of teachers who had waited about seven months to receive their dues despite repeated assurances from government officials that the money would be paid.

Just days earlier, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi confirmed that the Ksh1.5 billion had been released to the Ministry of Education, saying the government had fulfilled a promise he made to members of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).

Mbadi noted that the funds had been released specifically to clear the outstanding arrears, ending speculation over whether the Treasury would honour its commitment after previous payment promises failed to materialise.

The delayed payments had sparked frustration among teachers, with KUPPET at one point directing its members to boycott the invigilation and marking of the 2026 national examinations until the arrears were settled.

The dispute had also prompted repeated interventions by senior government officials, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

Kindiki had assured teachers that the payments would be processed once funds became available.

With the funds now released and payments underway, the latest announcement is expected to ease tensions between teachers and KNEC ahead of preparations for the 2026 national examinations.

The development also comes as KNEC has begun recruiting assessors for the 2026 KCSE oral and practical examinations.

Qualified secondary school teachers and college tutors are invited to submit applications before the July 15 deadline.

Teachers who are yet to receive their allowances have previously been advised by KNEC to ensure the details on their Contracted Professionals (CP2) portal are accurate to avoid delays arising from incorrect payment information.
