"Parents Are To Blame!" - Murkomen Says Over Indiscipline Cases In Kenyan Schools

CS Murkomen Announces Drastic Measures To Curb Rampant Goons, Gun-Weilding Criminals

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a nationwide crackdown on criminal gangs and political goons.

The CS also revealed fresh plans to deploy more police officers, particularly in areas considered hotspot for goons, over the coming weeks.

Murkomen spoke on Monday, July 13 during a function celebrating the life of David Kibiwott in Lokori, Turkana County.

Murkomen said that he had directed Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to intensify operations targeting gangs, warning that those behind acts of violence would face the full force of the law.

We have a plan with the Inspector General. Over the next few weeks, we will have intensified operations against goons and gangs,” Murkomen said.

“There will also be increased deployment of police officers at public functions to deal with these goons.”

Murkomen also dismissed the notion that authorities were enabling goonism.

He insisted that security agencies had already demonstrated their ability to dismantle organised criminal groups by dealing with banditry, and that criminal gangs would not pose a greater challenge.

“We have dealt with bandits; goons cannot be too challenging. It is just that we have to follow the judicial process,” he added.

This was the first time the CS was speaking on the escalating issue of goonism in the wake of two separate incidents in Nyahururu and Kisumu.

In Kisumu, two people lost their lives after a confrontation turned nasty as armed goons attempted to storm a church service where Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo were in attendance.

Meanwhile, in Nyahururu, a rally by leaders affiliated with the Linda Wananchi faction was also derailed by goons, in a melee which saw the driver of Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata sustain serious injuries.

Murkomen, in his remarks, defended the police response to the recent unrest in Kisumu and Nyahururu, revealing that 20 suspects had been arrested in Kisumu and another 10 in Nyahururu before being arraigned in court.

“What happened in Kisumu yesterday and Nyahururu? Let us pretend the police did not do anything. Twenty people have been arrested in Kisumu, 10 have been arrested in Nyahururu, and they have all been arraigned,” he said.

Before adding that those convicted of orchestrating violence deserved lengthy jail terms.

The Interior CS warned that investigations would not stop with those arrested on the ground, saying politicians found to have sponsored or incited violence would also face the law once sufficient evidence was gathered.

Murkomen singled out Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua.

The CS claimed that investigators should examine some of his recent public statements to establish whether they had any connection to the violence witnessed in Nyahururu.
