TERROR ALERT! 11 Al-Shabaab Militants Killed After Intelligence On Planned Attack

At least 11 suspected Al-Shabaab militants were killed on Sunday morning after Kenyan security forces launched an intelligence-led operation against a makeshift militant camp near the Kenya-Somalia border in Mandera County, police have said.

According to security officials, the raid was carried out by the Special Operations Group (SOG) with aerial support after intelligence indicated that about 30 militants had gathered at the camp while planning to carry out a terror attack on one of the villages along the Mandera border.

Police said the operation left 11 militants dead and seven others seriously injured, while the remaining fighters escaped across the border into Somalia.

Officers recovered three PKM machine guns, about 409 rounds of ammunition, and several documents believed to belong to the extremist group.

Authorities said the operation was aimed at disrupting the planned attack before it could be executed and preventing another cross-border terror incident in the North Eastern region

Investigators also recovered what they described as mandatory religious tax receipts allegedly issued by Al-Shabaab. Officials believe the documents provide new intelligence into how the group finances its operations and administers territories under its control through taxation and checkpoint collections.

According to security agencies, the recovered records reinforce intelligence that Al-Shabaab continues to operate an organised revenue collection network across parts of Somalia, using the funds to finance attacks and sustain militant activities.

The Mandera operation is part of an intensified security campaign targeting terrorist cells operating along the Kenya-Somalia frontier, where authorities have continued to conduct intelligence-led raids to prevent planned attacks.

The latest operation comes only days after officers stationed at the Kina Vehicle Checkpoint in Isiolo County arrested a suspect believed to be linked to an illegal firearms and ammunition trafficking network spanning Tana River, Isiolo, Meru, and Garissa counties.

Police said some of the weapons linked to the network were suspected to have been destined for Nairobi, underscoring continued efforts by security agencies to dismantle both terrorist and criminal supply chains.

Security officials noted that increased surveillance, intelligence gathering, and coordinated operations have significantly reduced cross-border terrorist attacks in recent years, although Al-Shabaab continues to make attempts to infiltrate Kenya through the North Eastern region.

Kenya has maintained heightened counter terrorism operations along the Somalia border since launching Operation Linda Nchi in 2011 following a series of cross-border attacks and kidnappings targeting tourists and aid workers.

Authorities say the latest raid demonstrates the continued use of intelligence-led operations to intercept militant groups before planned attacks can be carried out, while also yielding information that could support future counter-terrorism investigations.
