Ruto Appoints Former MP As New EPRA Chair For THREE Years
President William Ruto has selected former Bumula MP Moses Wekesa Mwambu Mabonga as the next Chairperson of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
The appointment was announced in a gazette notification dated July 24, 2026, and takes effect immediately. Mabonga will serve a three-year tenure as the energy sector regulator.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 12(1)(a) of the Energy Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of Kenya and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Moses Wekesa Mabonga,” the notice read in part.
Following his appointment, Mabonga will manage EPRA’s board, which is in charge of providing strategic direction and governance to the Authority.

As part of the reforms at EPRA, Energy Cabinet Secretary James Opiyo Wandayi appointed Faith Akiru Kuno to the Authority’s Board of Directors for a three-year term.
While announcing Kuno’s appointment to the helm of EPRA for three years, Wandayi also announced the immediate revocation of Jennipher Nawoi Long’or’s appointment.
The changes at EPRA come amid a wider leadership shake-up that began after former Director General Daniel Kiptoo resigned in April following his arrest and detention over the fuel importation saga.

Following Kiptoo’s resignation, Ruto appointed Engineer Joseph Oketch as the Acting Director General to steer the regulator as investigations and reforms within the energy sector continued.

Beyond the energy sector, President Ruto revoked the appointment of Thuo Mathenge as Chairperson of the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO).
Mathenge’s revocation comes barely two years after the Head of State appointed him to KALRO in November 2024, after revoking the appointment of Peter Weru.
In the same notice, Ruto reappointed Gilbert Maluki as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the National Irrigation Authority Board for another three-year term effective July 24, 2026.
The latest changes form part of ongoing adjustments to the leadership of state corporations as President Ruto seeks to strengthen governance and oversight across key public institutions.
