Somalia’s Deputy PM Returns Kenyan Passport, Claims Move Administrative Not Request
Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister Jibril Abdirashid Haji has announced that he has voluntarily returned a Kenyan passport previously issued to him.
Haji stated that the move was made in the interest of transparency and clarity in his public office.
In a statement, Haji said the passport was genuine, lawfully obtained, and issued in full compliance with the relevant laws and procedures.
He said returning the travel document was an administrative decision aimed at upholding the standards expected of public officials and was not prompted by any dispute or request from the Kenyan authorities.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the Government and the people of Kenya for longstanding hospitality and support to Somalis.
“This step is entirely administrative and was not prompted by any dispute or request from any authority. Their generosity and friendship will always be remembered with respect and gratitude,” he said.
Haji said his commitment to the Federal Republic of Somalia remains unwavering, adding that returning the passport reflects his dedication to maintaining clarity in his official role.
“Returning the passport reflects my dedication to maintaining absolute clarity in my public role and my steadfast loyalty to Somalia,” he said.

He also reaffirmed his respect for Kenya and its institutions, saying he remains committed to strengthening the longstanding relationship between Somalia and Kenya.
This comes days after the diplomatic relations between Kenya and Somalia were under renewed strain following the recent denial of entry into Kenya of Somalia government officials.
The denial of entry follows reports that Nairobi has intensified investigations into fraudulently acquired Kenyan passports allegedly held by Somali state officials and politically connected individuals.
The matter also featured prominently during a bilateral meeting between Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi and Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Ali on the sidelines of the 49th African Union Executive Council meeting in Addis Ababa.
According to a media dispatch after the discussions, the two ministers agreed to strengthen cooperation on immigration management, consular affairs and cross-border mobility.
However, neither government publicly linked the talks directly to the reported airport incidents.
