ODM's Junet Calls Public Participation A 'Hindrance' To Gov't Plans

Junet Reveals How Gachagua Blackmailed Ruto To Block Raila Talks In Tanzania

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has criticised Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua for masquerading as a defender of the late Raila Odinga.

Junet has accused Gachagua of previously working against efforts to resolve political tensions between President William Ruto and the former opposition leader.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, August 11, Junet claimed Gachagua blocked an attempt by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan to mediate between Ruto and Raila following the opposition demonstrations.

The legislator reveals that the former Deputy President threatened to resign if Ruto attended the talks.

“After the elections, when ODM went to the demonstrations and things were very bad and the country was going to the dogs, Tanzania’s President, on her own initiative, decided to come here and do arbitration between President Ruto and former Prime Minister,” Junet alleged.

The lawmaker said he travelled with Raila to Nanyuki, where they met Suluhu, and were scheduled to meet Ruto the following day.

Junet claimed Ruto later called them and said Gachagua had advised him against attending the meeting, warning that he would resign as Deputy President if Ruto attended the meeting.

“When we were waiting for him the following day, President Ruto called and said that his deputy President Gachagua has told me not to go to the meeting because if I do, he will resign as DP,” Junet claimed.

“So President Ruto said he might be going to solve one crisis but create another one in his government. So he urged us to look for another way to resolve the matter.”

Junet said the incident was among the reasons ODM could never be in a coalition involving Gachagua.

“We told President Ruto not to create another crisis and we looked for another formula and we still talked,” he added.

Junet also faulted the former DP for not mourning Raila to date, claiming that the DCP leader only sought to use the former Opposition leader’s name for political mileage.

“When Raila died, all the leadership, both in government and in Opposition, were present. Did you see anyone looking like Gachagua? Up to date, he’s not gone to the family to tell them sorry. He wants to use Raila’s name to make statements, bure kabisa,” he remarked.

“It is in public domain that it is Rigathi who made an attempt on Raila Odinga’s life during the 2023 demonstration when he instructed security officers to aim at him,” he added.

“To date, he has never mourned Raila. It is a fact, he hated Baba with a passion. In fact, he’s transferred the hate to me.”

Junet’s remarks come as Gachagua continued in his rebuke against the government, alleging that President Ruto has enriched himself at the expense of Kenyans.

In a statement issued earlier, the former Deputy President claimed Ruto had centralised control over independent constitutional commissions, State agencies, public procurement and the sale of strategic national assets.

“Over the last four years, William Ruto has captured the state. He has focused on centralising control of independent constitutional commissions, State entities, public sector procurement and sale of strategic national assets,” he claimed.

“All these measures are aimed at achieving the objective of enriching himself at the expense of 55 million Kenyans.”

“He has achieved the milestone of being certified as a US dollar billionaire in a four-year record courtesy of looting Kenyan public coffers.”

The former DP warned that Ruto’s record in office would come under heavy scrutiny ahead of the 2027 General Election.
