6 KWS Officers Arrested As Investigation On Missing Nakuru Man Kicks Off
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has detained six Kenya Wildlife Service officers in connection with Brian Odhiambo’s disappearance in Lake Nakuru National Park on Saturday last week.
The arrests were confirmed by Samwel Ngeiywo, Nakuru East’s Divisional Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO). KWS has stayed silent on the ongoing debate.
Brian Odhiambo has been missing since Saturday, January 18, 2025, when he is believed to have entered the protected area of Lake Nakuru National Park. His purpose was to fish, which is banned.

While making his way beyond the park’s fence and towards the lake, he was stopped by KWS officials. He took off and ran from the park.
The officers followed him into the Flamingo Estate and allegedly began roughing him up. They forced him back into the park and into a waiting automobile, according to witnesses.
His absence has provoked protests by locals, who are demanding his release and accountability from the authorities.
Residents of the Manyani estate in Nakuru East Sub-County protested the occurrence, claiming Odhiambo was last seen with KWS officers.

The protests disrupted commercial activities across three estates in Nakuru, with locals burning bonfires and demanding answers about his whereabouts.
The situation has worsened as a result of persistent disputes over fishing rights at Lake Nakuru, resulting in a number of murders and disappearances.

On Wednesday, Moses Olweny, who claims to have been beaten and maimed by rangers, claimed that KWS officials work with people to allow them to fish in the lake.
“We have an understanding with the officers. When I fish and the load is good, I send them Ksh10,000. When the load is bad, I send them Ksh5,000,” Moses revealed.
The fish in Lake Nakuru are unfit for human eating due to high amounts of poisonous arsenic, but this has not deterred locals from fishing.
KWS has yet to offer a statement on the matter. Our attempts to contact the service for comment also failed.
