Ruto Reveals Source Of Sugarcane Farmers’ Bonus In Response To Kalonzo’s Criticism

On Thursday at noon, President William Ruto slammed Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka for purportedly questioning the source of cash used to pay sugarcane farmers in Kakamega their bonuses.

Addressing Busia locals, the Head of State accused Kalonzo of undermining the government’s efforts to keep its commitments to Kenyans.

According to Ruto, the Ksh150 million in bonuses granted to sugarcane farmers was made by Mumias Sugar Company, not the government, as claimed by the Azimio leader.

Ruto accused the Wiper Party leader of instigating Kenyans while criticising Kalonzo.

He went on to say that sugarcane growers, like all other farmers in the country, deserved to receive their incentives on time.

“I said we will establish good management so that the farmer is not paid by the government,” Ruto clarified.

“The bonus has been paid but not by the government, it was done by the company because we have put proper management.”

“Tea and coffee farmers are always paid their bonuses, why is it that when a sugarcane farmer is paid their bonuses then people start raising unnecessary questions?” Ruto questioned.

In his remarks, the Head of State stated that it was the government’s job to follow up on such payments to ensure equal benefits for all Kenyans.

Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah shared Ruto’s remarks, accusing the former vice president of making unfounded assertions and generating unneeded concern among Kenyans.

“Kalonzo has joined MP Peter Salasya in the same league, asking questions like him. Is this the person who plans to compete against Ruto in 2027?” Ichung’wah wondered.

Ruto’s words came hours after Kalonzo accused him of squandering taxpayer money by paying non-statutory payments to farmers.

Kalonzo, who spoke to the press on Wednesday, January 22, stated that the Head of State’s Ksh150 million payment to sugarcane farmers in Kakamega on Monday, January 20, was made without Parliament’s sanction.

During the news conference, Kalonzo also declared plans to hold rallies at the end of March if the government fails to restore the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
