Gov’t Unveils New Police Unit To Help In Local Operations

The government has established a new police force, the National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU), to support government activities.

The new unit, NGAPU, was established on Friday, January 24, and will work under the Administration Police Service (APS) to support chiefs in carrying out operations across the country.

NGAPU will have its headquarters in Nairobi and subsidiaries at the regional, county, sub-county, divisional, and locational levels.

According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, the government has already assigned 6,000 police personnel to the unit, or around two policemen per chief.

There are 3,950 chiefs and 9,043 assistants nationwide.

A draft plan states that NGAPU will help National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) with security management and the execution of their tasks across all administrative divisions.

NGAPU will provide critical support to NGAOs, particularly in preserving law and order and providing protection for government sites.

They will also execute national policies and laws to ensure compliance in high-risk activities such as land disputes, regulatory enforcement, and anti-alcohol and drug addiction campaigns.

NGAPU officers will also be in charge of security for public events like barazas, as well as assisting in the arrest of suspects and the preservation of exhibits.

Their responsibilities include assisting NGAOs with conflict resolution and peacebuilding initiatives, as well as coordinating with law enforcement authorities to respond to complex occurrences in a coordinated manner.

The unit’s responsibilities also include preserving public safety by complying with national directives, protecting against threats, and carrying out valid instructions issued by authorities.

“NGAPU will provide NGAOs with the security capacity necessary to execute delivery of government services, improve public safety, and strengthen multiagency collaboration,” stated CS  Murkomen.
