Sudi, Cheruiyot Defends ‘Arap Ruto’ Hitmaker Marakwet Daughter, Blasts NCIC
Leaders have led the public outrage in response to Millicent Jerotich Kipkorir, also known as Marakwet Daughter, being summoned over the lyrics in her current song, ‘Arap Ruto.‘
Led by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot and outspoken Kapsaret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi, the leaders requested that the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) leave the singer alone.
On February 5, NCIC summoned Marakwet Daughter, stating that her song, which was released two weeks earlier, is likely to generate feelings of racial scorn, hatred, and animosity.

The five-minute song alternates between Swahili, Kalenjin, and English as the singer underlines what she sees as failings in the president’s programs.
“Words which are likely to incite feelings of ethnic contempt, hatred, and hostility and affect harmonious coexistence between different ethnic communities in Kenya, contrary to Section 13(1)(a) and Section 62 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act.”
In his NCIC answer, Cheruiyot accused the commission of ‘tribalism and cunning’.

While he did not explain his reasons, Marakwet Daughter’s defence follows months of criticism of Kenyans who express themselves online.
“You’d think this is an innocent move from a commission trying hard to do their job. Don’t be deceived,” he wrote.
Intimating, “The tribalists in the commission are simply aiding a narrative. Part of the larger scheme.”
Sudi, for his part, asked NCIC to withdraw the summons.
“NCIC, leave Marakwet Daughter alone! I’ve got a list of about 50 names that would be a much better use of your time instead of this nonsense,” he wrote in a post on X.

The song specifically addresses President William Ruto, condemning Kenyans’ suffering.
Part of the lyrics says, “Arap Ruto, when did we wrong you? Where? Tell us. Speak up,” before continuing, “You buried pity in Sugoi and humanity in Kapchagir.”
The music video, which was released less than two weeks ago, has already received over 164,000 views on YouTube. It features footage of President Ruto from numerous public gatherings across the country.
Her song discusses issues such as the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), the revision of the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) with the new university finance model, and the transfer from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Authority (SHA).
