Initial reports attributed the tragedy to a security breakdown, alleging that an unidentified intruder entered Ward Seven and fatally stabbed the patient with a kitchen knife.
However, additional sources suggest that the attack was carried out by a fellow patient, as visitors are not permitted in the wards after 6:00 p.m.
In response to the reports, KNH Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) William Sigilali announced that investigations were underway to determine what transpired.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm an incident involving the tragic death of a patient at the Kenyatta National Hospital,” the notice read in part.

While sending condolences to the family, the hospital reassured Kenyans of its commitment to safety and promised to provide updates as more information became available.
“Kenyatta National Hospital remains committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all. The safety and well-being of our patients, staff, and visitors are our utmost priority,” the hospital’s CEO assured.

This sad tragedy occurred just a week after the hospital was in the news for stranded patients due to Social Health Authority (SHA) system malfunctions.
On Tuesday, the systems experienced a temporary outage, which impacted vital platforms such as e-Citizen and Social Health Authority (SHA).
In a statement, the hospital informed the public that the problem was quickly fixed and that normal activities will resume shortly after.
Only two weeks ago, patients were again stranded at the hospital, prompting some to march to Afya House and disrupt a medical news briefing by the Health Cabinet Secretary.
