Kenya Confirms First Engagement With Convicted Nduta In Vietnam Prison

On Friday, March 21, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei provided an update on Margaret Nduta, who is currently being imprisoned in a prison in Vietnam, indicating that she was in good health.

Korir reported the new development in a statement, saying that a Kenyan team deployed to Vietnam was finally able to secure access to Nduta, who is being imprisoned in Hoi Chi Minh Prison on drug trafficking charges.

Nduta was sentenced to death by a Vietnamese court after being found guilty of selling more than two kilograms of cocaine. He was scheduled to be killed on Monday, March 18.

“Pleased to update that our team from Bangkok finally secured travel visas and made it to Hoi Chi Minh Prison in Vietnam, where Margaret Nduta is presently held,” Sing’oei stated.

“We can confirm that while deeply distressed, Margaret is coping and has been treated humanely,” he added.

Sing’oei added that efforts to save Nduta from execution were still on, including an appeal filed in court and diplomatic talks between Kenya and Vietnam.

“Though Margaret was not represented by counsel during the trial, an appeal filed a few days ago will be heard soon,” the PS stated.

“In the meantime, we continue to engage our Vietnamese counterparts on other options towards resolving this difficult matter.”

Kenya’s representatives in Thailand are attempting to secure a stay of Nduta’s execution to enable additional dialogue between Kenya and the Vietnamese authorities.

The latest development comes after the PS said that he spoke with Vietnam’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Nguyen Minh Hang, about Nduta’s issue.

Korir stated on Sunday, March 16, that while Nduta’s situation was complex and tough, Nguyen told him that Kenya’s plea was being considered.

Nduta was condemned to die by lethal injection on March 6, this year, after being convicted of cocaine trafficking.
