Moi University Announces Mass Layoffs Amidst Financial Difficulties
Moi University has announced plans to lay off many personnel, citing financial challenges caused by a decrease in student enrollments.
In a notice released on Wednesday, acting Vice Chancellor Kiplagat Kotut blamed the decision on a revenue shortfall.
Poor revenue collection has made it impossible for the institution to continue operations and satisfy its financial obligations, including employee salaries.
“In accordance with Section 40 of the Employment Act 2007, Laws of Kenya, and the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between Moi University and the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), we hereby give formal notice of an intention to declare redundancy affecting several employees who are members of your Union,” the notice read.
The warning stated that revenue difficulties made it difficult to maintain activities within the organization.
As a result, meeting the University’s financial responsibilities, including paying personnel salaries, has proven difficult.
The university’s administration claimed that conversations with concerned staff and union representatives were proceeding in compliance with the legislation and the UASU Collective Bargaining Agreement.

“As a result, we are compelled to review our operations and adjust the workforce accordingly to ensure sustainability of the University,” the notice added.
“During the notice period, we will engage in consultations with the affected employees and their Union representatives, in accordance with the law and the UASU CBA.”
However, the university stated that they were looking into alternative ways to reduce the impact of redundancies.
These include prospective redeployment or alternative jobs, if applicable, in accordance with the Employment Act, individual contracts, and the UASU CBA 2012/2013.

The university has experienced learning disruption in recent months due to financial difficulties and a teachers’ strike.
“The affected employees will be entitled to severance pay, salary in lieu of notice, payment for accrued leave days, and any other unpaid benefits,” the notice stated.
“All necessary deductions will be made in accordance with statutory requirements.”
The institution stated that specifics about the affected personnel and the redundancy procedure timeline would be shared in due course.
