Details Of Damages From KDF-Led Demolition In Mombasa To Nearby Buildings

The demolition of an 11-story structure in Mombasa by explosives on Wednesday resulted in the unmitigated destruction of surrounding buildings.

Footage published online showed surrounding buildings with smashed windows, punctured walls, and ruined floors as a result of the explosion.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the destruction has devastated commercial and residential buildings.

The demolition, which took place on Wednesday, April 9, was necessary due to the building’s feared collapse, which had residents concerned about the risk it posed.

A multi-agency examination declared the storey building on Abdel Nasser Road physically unsound.

According to Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sherrif Nassir, the building’s foundation was severely compromised as a result of an unapproved borehole digging into it.

The ground floor columns were crumbling by around three meters.

Following an evaluation, individuals living near the building were forced to evacuate and relocate to safer areas prior to its demolition in a multi-agency operation.

On Tuesday evening, Nassir addressed the public and ordered the temporary closure of all schools in the designated demolition zone.

The governor also requested that companies within a 1.2-kilometer radius of the crumbling structure stay away from their premises for at least eight hours on demolition day.

Sharrif revealed that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will oversee the demolition exercise, which would involve the use of explosives.

Soipan Tuya, the Defence Cabinet Secretary, then issued a gazette announcing the deployment of military personnel in charge of the exercise.

The KDF officers will collaborate with officers from the National Police Service (NPS) to protect the residents’ safety during the demolition.

Matatus, tuk-tuks, and boda bodas all crowded the Nyali bridge as they rushed to migrate to the northern mainland regions, including Nyali, Bamburi, and Kisauni, before the bridge and its following road were closed for immediate demolition.
