This development comes just a day after his family reported that he was certified brain-dead at midnight on Sunday.
While announcing the news, a family representative stated that because his brainstem was no longer functioning, the family was waiting for doctors to pronounce him clinically dead.
The family was unable to remove Kariuki from life support until his heart ceased beating due to the country’s legal framework.

During the June 17 protests, two police officers were captured on tape abusing an unarmed mask salesman before shooting him in the head at point-blank range.
Kariuki was left bleeding on the ground, and fellow demonstrators rushed him to the hospital.

Hours later, an emergency surgery at Kenyatta National Hospital removed a bullet from his head that was presumed to be rubber.
His shooting sparked outrage among human rights activists and the wider public, not just because he was unarmed, but also because the protest was intended to highlight police brutality.
The two police officers were arrested shortly after the shooting, and on June 19, they were arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts.
The judge granted the prosecution and the defence’s wish to hold them for 15 days to allow for further investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
