IEBC Announces Voter Verification Portal Maintenance After Uproar

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced a scheduled maintenance exercise for its voter verification webpage.

According to the commission, the experiment is part of a long-term transition to modernized infrastructure.

In a statement, the IEBC stated that the upgrade aims to improve system performance and boost security in preparation for the next elections.

The IEBC acknowledged the temporary difficulty that the maintenance may create, and urged the public to be patient during the upgrade process.

“The Commission highly regrets any inconvenience this may cause and appreciates your understanding as it works towards serving you better,” the IEBC stated.

The electoral authority informed Kenyans that the registration records of 22,120,458 voters, recorded during the 2022 General Election, would remain secure and unmodified during the migration process.

The panel vowed to notify the public when the system was fully functioning and ready for use.

This announcement comes as there is rising skepticism online about the voter registration system’s integrity.

This was spurred by a viral social media post claiming that the commission was ready to remove over two million so-called ghost voters.

The post claimed that Kiambu, Meru, Nairobi, and Nyeri had the most bogus voters.

However, on June 5, the IEBC issued a robust denial, describing the post as incorrect and deceptive.

“Please note that the commission currently neither has a chairperson nor members of the commission. Therefore, any information circulating on social media is null and void,” read the commission’s statement, posted on X.

The IEBC has yet to be reestablished. On June 10, President William Ruto formally appointed Erastus Ethekon as the IEBC chairperson, along with six new commissioners.

It marked a key step in rebuilding the electoral body following the post-2022 transition.

IEBC emphasised that no voter register audit is underway, nor has any directive been issued to alter the electoral roll.

“IEBC remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening Kenya’s democracy,” the commission said.
