HELB Issues Notice to Applicants Receiving Error Messages
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has addressed the concerns of candidates who have received an error message throughout the application procedure.
This comes ahead of the September university and college admissions for 2024 KCSE aspirants.
In a July 7 announcement, the board stated that some candidates were receiving error messages suggesting that their national identification had been enabled on another device.
To address this issue, HELB encouraged them to contact its support team, either through official channels or by sending a direct message on its social media profiles.
“Seeing an error on the HELB App that your National ID is already activated on another device? Don’t worry! Just send us a direct message with your registered phone number and National ID, and we’ll assist you in getting it resolved quickly,” HELB stated.

This comes just one day after the portal reopened following 72 hours of scheduled maintenance that began last week.
The three-day outage was announced by the board on Thursday, July 3, just one day after the portal opened for both first-time and subsequent applicants.
“The Higher Education Financing Portal is under maintenance to improve service. Downtime will last at least 72 hours,” HELB said in a statement.
The service update was scheduled to expire on Monday, July 7, leaving many hopeful candidates who had recently earned university and college placements in limbo.

It was announced after students from various prestigious educational institutions around the country complained about their inability to use the portal.
“There’s been some serious head-scratching among students applying for HELB loans —both first-time and continuing applicants,” one such student lamented on a public WhatsApp group.
Students entering their first year of higher education can now apply for loans and scholarships for the academic year 2025/2026.
Students enrolled in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, as well as those preparing to attend the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), are eligible to apply.
