Gachagua Responds To Arrest Threats To Stop His U.S Trip

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said that he is not concerned about any arrest threats issued by President William Ruto’s government as he prepares to leave the country tonight.

During a press conference on Wednesday, July 9, Gachagua alleged that some of his close associates had received threats preventing him from traveling to the United States for diaspora activities.

“I have been threatened by people close to William Ruto who called some of my people today and said that they will want to stop me from leaving the country,” Gachagua claimed.

“I have no problem. If you want to come and arrest me at the airport, as you were threatening us, you can go ahead. You cannot sell fear to us, and even if you sold it to us, we cannot buy it.”

As a result, the former DP stated that whether or not he is barred from entering the United States, he will continue to defend individuals arrested on what he called trumped-up terrorism allegations.

He said that the United Opposition had put up a team of lawyers to defend them.

On July 8, the Director of Public Prosecutions approved and filed terrorist charges against 37 Kenyans suspected of inciting disruption.

This includes the destruction of the Kiambu Law Court during the June 25 commemorative protests. Two of them are prominent Gachagua allies.

On Wednesday, July 9, Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, another Gachagua ally, appeared in court to face terrorism charges after allegedly supporting goons during the July 7 Saba Saba Day rallies.

Gachagua is planning a two-month tour to the United States to court diaspora voters, his first international travel since being ousted in October 2024.

From July to August, Gachagua will visit cities in Texas, California, Washington, Massachusetts, and Maryland.

The head of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) is anticipated to popularize his new party and increase diaspora votes by holding town hall meetings with Kenyans living in the United States and attending social gatherings.

He will also meet with chosen IS businesspeople and investors as part of a larger drive to promote the opposition as a credible option in the run-up to the 2027 general election.
