IEBC Reveals FOUR Recall Petitions For Sitting MPs
Speaking to the press on Saturday in Mombasa, commission chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon stated that they are currently analyzing the submissions and will evaluate each based on its merits.
“We currently have roughly four petitions. We will look at them once we go back to the office,” said Ethekon.
This is because he stated that the right to recall is enshrined in the constitution, and the commission is dedicated to enforcing the law.
“It is the right of every Kenyan to exercise that right of recall under the constitution, and as IEBC, we will be there to do that which we can or which the law allows us,” he stated.

The Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Erastus Edung Ethekon, has confirmed that the commission has received four petitions to recall certain Members of Parliament.

He promised the people that all processes will be carried out in conformity with legal and constitutional standards.
“We will receive those petitions, we will examine them, and then we will, of course, respond to them accordingly,” he said.
The recall mechanism is based on Article 104 of the Constitution and the Elections Act of 2011.

It permits Kenyans to initiate the removal of an MP, Senator, or MCA only two years after their election, rather than in the final 12 months before the next general election.

Breach of leadership and integrity standards, misuse of public resources, and conviction for electoral offenses are all valid grounds for recall.
At the same time, the Ethekon reported that the commission had filed a petition with the Supreme Court seeking legal guidance on the delayed boundary review, which had been hampered by the commissioners’ protracted absence.
Ethekon also described the Commission’s current priority areas.
These include voter registration, legal revisions, electoral amendments, and preparations for impending by-elections throughout the country.
