‘Hold Your Horses! You Will Receive Compensation!’ – Raila Tells Protest Victims
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has told Kenyans and victims of the Gen-Z protests that they will receive compensation.
Raila has advised Kenyans to be patient as plans are being made to begin the compensation process.
This followed anti-government protests that occurred in 2024, which left at least 50 people dead and hundreds with serious injuries.
Raila stated in a Sunday interview with NTV that contingency funds are ready to cover these compensations.
He stated that a task team has been formed, particularly to manage and deal with the impending compensation.

“On the issue of compensation, we said this must happen. Shortly, the compensations are going to start. There is always the provision of contingencies in the budget; the contingency fund is available,” he said.
“I want you to hold your horses, and shortly, there is going to be compensation which is going to start. We now have a Taskforce to deal with it.”
Raila stated that the task force’s purpose is to conduct an internal assessment of the 10-point agenda’s execution, determining what has been completed and what remains, and informing future measures.
On March 7, 2025, President William Ruto and Raila signed a deal at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) promising national consultation and political stability.
Since then, Raila’s allies have officially supported the coalition, with some promising to support Ruto’s re-election attempt in 2027.
The emergence of the broad-based administration had a profound impact on Kenya’s political environment.
Following the appointment of several Raila loyalists to crucial cabinet positions, the border between opposition and government became increasingly blurred.

John Mbadi was appointed Treasury Cabinet Secretary, while former ODM deputy party leader Hassan Joho took over the Mining portfolio.
Meanwhile, Opiyo Wandayi and Wycliffe Oparanya were assigned the Energy and MSMEs portfolios, respectively, indicating a growing collaboration between the two factions.
Ruto has since defended the formation of the broad-based government, describing it as divinely inspired, even as public outrage grows over increasing police brutality.
The 10-point agreement, among others, outlawed abduction, extrajudicial killings and compensation for the victims of the protests.
