Activist Mwabili Mwagodi Reportedly Abducted In Tanzania

Another Kenyan activist has reportedly been kidnapped in Tanzania, only weeks after six other Kenyan activists, including Boniface Mwangi, were arrested in the same country.

While confirming the incident on Friday morning, Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid revealed that Mwabili Mwagodi was allegedly kidnapped on Wednesday, July 21, by unknown individuals in the neighboring country.

Mwagodi, who has been residing in Tanzania in recent months, has spoken out against political donations to churches.

He just launched a campaign called Occupy the Church, which targets errant preachers.

Khalid stated that he learned about Mwagodi’s abduction from a family member who informed him personally regarding the activist’s whereabouts.

While announcing Mwagodi’s alleged abduction, the Vocal Africa head criticized President Samia Suluhu’s administration for allegedly targeting Kenyan activists without justification.

“A Kenyan has been abducted in Tanzania. Again. Family has confirmed that Mwabili Mwagodi, who is a Kenyan activist and was vocal against church donations, was abducted in Tanzania on Wednesday,” said Khalid.

“It seems Samia Suluhu and her government are working around the clock to target Kenyan activists. Free Mwabili Mwagodi now,” he added.

Mwagodi’s wife commented on the matter, revealing that her husband went missing on Wednesday around 10 p.m. while on his way to Dar es Salaam.

According to her, Mwagodi left his car behind and took public transportation to Dar es Salaam, where he works for a hospitality company.

His phone rang on the way to the city. His wife’s attempts to reach him via phone were fruitless, increasing suspicions about an abduction.

Before moving to Tanzania, Mwabili worked as a hotelier in Mombasa, where he launched his campaign against preachers’ habit of inviting politicians to their churches.

Mwabili, like his fellow activists, has expressed criticism of President William Ruto’s administration.

In 2024, he traveled from Mombasa to Nyahururu to rally young people against the defunct Finance Bill 2024.
