Kenya Speaks Following the Detention of Agnes Wanjiru’s Murderer

Kenya’s prosecution department welcomed the arrest on Saturday of a British ex-soldier accused of murdering Agnes Wanjiru in the East African country over a decade ago.

A judge remanded Robert James Purkiss, 38, in custody after his arrest on Thursday, according to Britain’s National Crime Agency.

Purkiss is wanted in Kenya on suspicion of killing 21-year-old Agnes Wanjiru in 2012, a case that has strained diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The young mother’s body was discovered in a septic tank two months after she allegedly partied with British soldiers at a hotel in Nanyuki, a town in central Kenya where Britain maintains a permanent army post.

Kenya’s Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) applauded the “significant development” on X, stating that it was the result of an “extensive and coordinated effort” by British and Kenyan officials.

The ODPP “reiterates its unwavering commitment to pursuing justice for Agnes Wanjiru and her family, in collaboration with international partners, to ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable”, the statement added.
