BY-ELECTION: ODM Soundingly Wins Kasipul, Ugunja Parliamentaries

ODM’s Moses Omondi Okoth has been named the new Member of Parliament elect for the Ugunja Constituency, securing the seat with a commanding lead in a by-election highlighted by low voter turnout.

Dennis Omari, the Ugunja Constituency Returning Officer, declared Okoth’s victory after tallying was completed in the early hours.

Okoth received 9,447 votes, considerably exceeding his nearest adversary, Wiper Party’s Orodi Odhiambo, who received 1,819 votes.

The race featured a wide field of applicants, with Fredrick Ochiel of UDM finishing third.

Other candidates included Benson Obol Otieno (United Green Movement), Maurice Okumu (Liberal Party Movement), Vincent Olengo (Kenya Moja), Chris Budo (KANU), Lilian Akinyi (National Alliance Party), Erick Ofiro (Jubilee Party), and Oliver Ochieng (National Liberal Party).

Despite the wide slate, turnout was just 24.98 percent, with 15,017 voters participating.

Speaking shortly after getting his certificate, Okoth praised the citizens of Ugunja for putting their trust in him, but also expressed concern about the poor attendance.

“I thank Ugunja residents for taking their time and coming out, though they didn’t turn up as we expected,” he said.

“The turnout was low. We hoped that they would have turned up more than this, but those who found time came out and exercised their democratic right by electing the second Ugunja MP.”

Boyd Were of the ODM party promised to serve all Kasipul locals after winning the November 27 by-election.

The 27-year-old spoke shortly after getting his winner’s certificate from Agoro Sare High School in Oyugis town, promising to keep his campaign promises.

Were announced shortly after his election that he will cooperate with all constituents.

He thanked residents for their support, saying, “I still believe that I am fit to be the MP for Kasipul constituency. I thank our people for the great support they have given me.”
