Gachagua Ally Blasts Matiang’i, Jubilee Over Isolationism

Embakasi North MP and Nairobi gubernatorial candidate James Gakuya has urged former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and the Jubilee Party to join forces with other opposition parties.

He cautioned that taking a different political course could further splinter the already weak unity of the United Opposition group.

Speaking on Sunday, December 7, at a rally in Mwiki, Nairobi County, attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Gakuya warned Jubilee against isolating itself.

“I want to tell Matiang’i and the Jubilee Party. Stop following your own path, you will get lost,” he declared.

His statements highlight new tensions inside the United Opposition, amid mounting speculation about internal schisms.

Concerns have also been raised that conflicts about strategy, allegiance, and political alignments for 2027 are growing coalition divides.

Jubilee and the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) have traded allegations in recent days, with each saying the other is acting as a mole within the coalition and secretly working with the government.

The animosity stems from a recent public feud among the opposition’s leadership.

In September 2025, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni stated that Gachagua was meeting with President Ruto behind closed doors.

He said that Gachagua had met with Narok County authorities to discuss close cooperation in the recently finished November 27 by-election.

In response to the allegations, Gachagua categorically denied them, stating that he would work with anyone but the president.

“I can tell you, from what the people of Mount Kenya have told me, William Ruto is not part of that equation,” Gachagua retorted in an interview.

“We have no intention whatsoever to have any discussion, any negotiation with one William Ruto.”

Gachagua later continued his attack on Jubilee, branding the party “a red wheelbarrow” at a rally in Mount Kenya and tying it to secret negotiations within President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance.

Matiang’i, the Jubilee Party’s presidential candidate, has been absent from most of the events attended by Gachagua and Kalonzo, fueling speculation that he is forging his own political path.

He is increasingly perceived as luring voters to his side as he builds momentum for the 2027 election.

Despite these public exchanges, coalition leaders have insisted that they remain committed to strengthening opposition unity, assuring supporters that they would field a single candidate to face William Ruto in 2027.
