Kenya Signs Historic Defence Cooperation Agreement to Boost Military
Decades of diplomatic relations between Kenya and the Czech Republic have been formalized with the signing of a Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA).
Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Soipan Tuya, and the Czech Republic’s ambassador to Kenya, Nicol Adamcová, presided over the historic signing today at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.
CS Tuya emphasized the agreement’s importance for the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) during his speech on the occasion.
“This marks a strategic step in reinforcing our defence capabilities, ensuring our personnel are better equipped, trained, and prepared for regional and international peacekeeping and security responsibilities,” she stated.

Since 1993, Kenya and the Czech Republic have maintained friendly diplomatic ties. Over time, defence cooperation has grown to be a key component of bilateral interaction.
A formal, structured framework intended to direct and improve military cooperation, including training, capacity-building, and cooperative projects, is the result of discussions for the DCA that started in 2019.
Senior officials from both countries’ Ministries of Defence, Foreign Affairs, and Diaspora Affairs, as well as Kenya’s Ambassador to Germany, Stella Mokaya Orina, and Major General Fredrick Leuria, Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Operations, Plans, Doctrine, and Training, attended the signing.
Both countries reiterated their dedication to fostering peace and stability both inside and outside of East Africa, as well as to mutual trust and shared security goals.
Earlier this month, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) strengthened defence ties with India during a strategic meeting in Nairobi on January 13, 2026.
Their discussions focused on joint military training, defence industry cooperation, medical training, and border security, laying the groundwork for continued collaboration under the Joint Defence Cooperation Committee.

Kenya and France also signed a DCA to strengthen bilateral security cooperation.
Key areas include intelligence sharing, maritime security, peacekeeping, and personnel training. Signatories included Kenya’s Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya and the French Ambassador to Kenya, Arnaud Suquet.
The Kenya-UK Strategic Partnership, including a five-year DCA, was renewed between 2021 and 2025, focusing on shared threats like Al-Shabaab and enhancing the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK).
These agreements create structured frameworks for enhanced cooperation, fostering self-reliance and improving armed forces’ operational effectiveness in high-threat environments.
