Several Students Feared Dead While Looking At Ruto’s Motorcade In Nandi

Several learners are feared dead after 11 students at the Kapsabet School for the Deaf in Nandi County reportedly fell into a septic tank on Thursday, March 12.

According to reports, the learners stood on top of a 20-foot-long septic tank in a bid to catch a glimpse of President William Ruto’s motorcade that was passing by the school early Thursday morning.

Ruto was on his way to the nearby Kapsabet Girls’ High School, where the Head of State was expected to visit.

As the students piled on top of the tank, it caved, taking the students with it.

Following the incident, community residents conducted rescue operations before police arrived at the scene.

However, by the time of this publication, scores of learners had been rescued and rushed to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital.

At the time of publishing this article, some reports indicate that at least one student has died, but it has not been able to independently verify these reports.

President Ruto made a stop at the school where he expressed regret for the disaster and gave Ksh5 million for the development of infrastructure at the affected school.

“I am here on a development tour for this region. I am aware that some students got injured when they came to see me,” he stated.

“I am very sorry for the accident, and we will look into the matter together with the county government.”

I have assessed the school and realised that you need some infrastructure development. For that, I will leave you Ksh 5 million,” Ruto added and requested to be made aware of other needs the school might require.

The Head of State then headed to Kapsabet Girls’ where he attended a Thanksgiving ceremony.

As the public now awaits an official statement from the police and other relevant authorities, investigations into the incident are expected to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The incident comes barely a year after a similar tragedy at Ramba Boys High School in March 2025, where two students lost their lives after falling into a septic tank.

The school was later closed indefinitely following unrest among students, who accused the administration of ignoring repeated warnings about the dangerous condition of the septic tank.
