School Closed Indefinitely After Students Walk Out At Night, Cause Unknown

Kangaru Boys Secondary School in Embu County has been closed indefinitely following a strike that broke out on Sunday, March 22.

The incident saw the majority of learners leave the school premises in the middle of the night, prompting concern among local residents and authorities in the area.

Videos and Photos and shared online show learners walking along the Embu–Meru Highway, apparently in search of transport to go to their homes.

Other students were seen flocking in large groups in Embu town, armed with whistles, causing a major traffic disruption in the town.

Local authorities and the school administration are yet to issue a report on the cause of the unrest, which in the meantime remains unclear.

It is also unclear whether the students destroyed any property at the school.

Several months earlier, students staged a similar walk out on the grounds that a teacher had assaulted one of their colleagues.

Two months ago, the Ministry of Interior announced that it had launched a crackdown in 15 counties to curb cases of school unrest across the country.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced the crackdown on Wednesday, February 4, following a monthly meeting of Principal Secretaries chaired by the Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei.

Omollo said that the crackdown will focus on several counties, among them Kericho, Nandi, Nakuru, Kitui, Tharaka Nithi, Kakamega, Narok, Kisii, Nyeri, Nyamira, Kajiado, Migori, Kirinyaga, Trans Nzoia, and Nairobi.
