Ruto Promises New Ksh3 Billion Ferry For Likoni Crossing
President William Ruto has announced that the government will purchase a new ferry for Mombasa’s congested Likoni crossing as part of measures to enhance transportation in the coastal city.
During his development visit to the Coast region, Ruto stated that the government had allocated Sh3 billion to the project, with the new boat scheduled to begin operations before December of this year.
“I would like to tell the people of Mombasa and the whole world that we are building another ferry,” the President said while addressing residents at the Likoni channel.
“Before December, we have committed Sh3 billion. By December, we will have a new ferry to reduce the congestion here at this ferry,” he added.
The Head of State also announced an additional Sh500 million investment to improve mobility and transportation infrastructure in Mombasa County.
The Likoni Ferry is one of Kenya’s most vital transportation links, linking Mombasa Island to the South Coast.
Thousands of pedestrians, private motorists, public service vehicles and traders rely on the crossing every day for movement and business activities.
For years, residents and travellers have raised concerns over traffic congestion, long waiting hours and overcrowding at the crossing, particularly during rush hours and holiday periods.

The situation has often disrupted transport and business operations, affecting both residents and tourists visiting the coastal region.
The planned ferry is expected to ease pressure at the channel and improve the movement of people and goods between the island and mainland areas.
Ruto’s announcement came as he began a four-day development tour of the Coast region.
The President is expected to inspect and launch several projects related to infrastructure, housing, electricity and economic development.
The President said the government remains committed to investing in projects that improve public transport, create jobs and support economic growth across the country.
