DCI Responds To Claims That Raila Odinga Was Poisoned
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have emphatically denied popular social media accusations that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was poisoned.
In a statement issued on Friday, June 12, the DCI described a post stating that Raila was poisoned with botulinum toxin by an Indian doctor who was supposedly paid to perform the crime as false and misleading.
The bogus post stated that the Indian doctor admitted to being paid Ksh300 million to poison the late former Prime Minister while he was receiving treatment in the Asian country.
According to the viral post, the doctor purportedly disclosed that the drug used was botulinum toxin, a deadly neurotoxin that, when consumed, blocks nerve signals to muscles, causing paralysis.
The DCI categorically rejected the claims, indicating that the information being circulated online was fabricated and urged members of the public not to fall victim to such allegations.

The DCI’s intervention comes amid growing concerns over the spread of fake news on social media platforms, particularly content targeting political leaders and other leaders.
The latest development comes hardly 8 months after the demise of the former Prime Minister, who passed away on October 15, 2025, while taking a morning walk in Kerala, India.
He was rushed to the nearby Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, but doctors were unable to revive him using resuscitation measures, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

While cardiac arrest was reported as the immediate cause of his death, further verified reports indicated that Odinga also had other underlying contributing factors to his untimely death.
Weeks before his trip to India, Raila had suffered a stroke and was also managing other long-term chronic illnesses, including diabetes and hypertension.
At the time of his illness, President William Ruto was fully aware of Railaβs illness and personally facilitated his travel to India for treatment following a consultation with the latter’s family.
Despite Raila’s death and subsequent burial on October 19, 2025, speculations have persisted over the circumstances surrounding his demise, with various unverified claims continuing to circulate on social media.
