“This Is A Place Of Refuge!” – Archbishop Sapit Says, Demands IG Kanja’s Resignation

Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit of the Anglican Church of Kenya has criticized thugs’ raids on churches, hotels, and streets on Friday.

Ole Sapit called for the swift arrest and punishment of those guilty, or the resignation of the Inspector General of Police.

Speaking at All Saints Cathedral, Archbishop Sapit said he had cancelled other engagements to address the situation, describing the events as a wake-up call for the nation.

“Goons have overrun our streets, hotels, and churches, and we ask: where are we as a people, country, and community?” he posed. “Many never expected to witness what we witnessed on Friday.”

The Archbishop reaffirmed the Cathedral’s status as a sanctuary, citing its historic role in protecting the weak.

“This Cathedral sheltered the mothers of political prisoners. It stood with those who were seeking justice when it was not popular,” he said. “This is a place of refuge, and this Cathedral will remain so.”

He emphasized that church spaces are intended for worship and reflection, and that budget review discussions held there were done in that spirit.

“We must stand against what is wrong. We condemn the invasion of churches and homes,” he stated.

Archbishop Sapit issued a stern demand to security authorities: “We demand the arrest and prosecution of the goons. If not, the IG should resign because he has failed.”

The chaos on Friday began at the entrance of All Saints Cathedral, where goons engaged in a confrontation with security guards as they forced their way into the church grounds and unleashed terror.

The attackers moved past the church building to the conference section, where a post-budget conference was taking place.

Police were forced to intervene and disperse the attackers, who had already destroyed conference materials and assaulted some attendees. One individual was later arrested and is currently being held in custody.

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) condemned the attack and questioned why a government official would allegedly send armed goons to disrupt a post-budget dialogue forum organised by registered civil society organisations.

NCCK is demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of the government official named as the sponsor of the goons.

The council further noted that Kenyans’ right to access information held by the State, as guaranteed under Article 35 of the Constitution, must be respected.
