Sifuna Breaks Silence After Second Ouster As ODM Secretary-General

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has indicated that he will go to court to protest the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) decision to remove him as Secretary-General.

Sifuna and his colleagues declared the recent move by the ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) unlawful and vowed to oppose it through legal means.

They were speaking during a morning press event called by the ODM’s Linda Mwananchi faction in Nairobi on Tuesday, June 23.

In a statement delivered by Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, the faction accused the party leadership of making the same mistakes that resulted in the last expulsion being overturned by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal.

“Late last evening, we were made aware of the decision of the ODM NEC purporting, for the second time, to remove Secretary General Edwin Sifuna from office,” Omondi said.

“On the face of it, the decision is similar to the one made in February, which was unfair and unconstitutional.”

The faction maintained that the latest decision was legally flawed and expressed confidence that the courts would once again rule in Sifuna’s favour.

“We are convinced to test the propriety of the purported ouster in court because we believe it should suffer the same fate as the February ouster,” Omondi added.

The group also announced the postponement of its planned Linda Mwananchi rallies in Kisii and Keroka from June 26 to July 3.

According to the faction, the decision was made to allow members to join Kenyans marking the anniversary of the Gen Z protests and stand in solidarity with victims of last year’s demonstrations.

“We wish to inform our members, supporters, and the country at large that our Linda Mwananchi rallies scheduled for June 26 have been postponed to July 3,” the statement read.

The leaders also raised concerns over what they described as reports of planned excessive use of force against protesters.

They warned security agencies against resorting to police brutality during the commemorative demonstrations.

The latest developments come barely a day after ODM’s National Executive Committee resolved to remove Sifuna from his position as Secretary General following a meeting held at Chungwa House and chaired by ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga.

The party said the decision followed recommendations by its Internal Disputes Resolution Committee, which investigated complaints against Sifuna.

However, the move has deepened divisions within ODM, where Sifuna has emerged as one of the strongest critics of the party’s cooperation agreement with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.
