REPORT: 74 Arrested In June 25 Nairobi Protests

According to reports, around 74 persons arrested during the June 25 demonstrations were kept overnight at Central Police Station and are scheduled to appear before the Milimani Magistrates’ Court on Friday, June 26.

In an update published with this newspaper, former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo stated that the outcome came as a result of pressure from advocates and activists demanding their swift arraignment.

Legal representatives have reportedly been placed on standby to provide pro bono representation to anyone charged.

“In accordance with their right to a fair trial, we agitated for their arraignment in Court without undue delay,” Odhiambo said.

“The 74 will be presented before the Magistrates Court in Milimani later today, where a team of Advocates are on standby to represent them pro bono.”

In addition, she urged advocates in the Kibra and Makadara Law Courts to give their services when needed.

Odhiambo said lawyers should be prepared to offer legal assistance in case additional detainees from other police stations are presented in those courts.

This comes after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen issued a security update on Thursday.

Murkomen reported that 355 people had been arrested nationwide in connection with the demonstrations, with Nairobi recording the highest number at 161.

He further noted that investigations were ongoing and that the total number of arrests could rise as police continue processing cases arising from the protests.

“While the situation was relatively calm across the country, a few criminal elements attempted to commit diverse crimes in the guise of staging peaceful demonstrations,” Murkomen said.

“Consequently, a total of 355 arrests were made in connection with the demonstrations. This is a developing case; it could be more.”
