NITHI BRIDGE: Ruto Claims Ksh 7 Billion Allocated For Upgrade, Meru Governor Confirms

President William Ruto claims he has set aside Ksh7 billion for the renovation of the dangerous Nithi Bridge.

The bridge has claimed dozens of lives over the years owing to numerous vehicle accidents, Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma announced.

Mutuma made the discovery on Sunday, June 28, at a 60th anniversary thanksgiving celebration at Burieruri High School in Meru County, which was attended by President Ruto.

Addressing the crowd, the governor commended Ruto for prioritising the long-awaited project.

Mutuma claimed that he was the first Head of State to take tangible action to address the bridge’s repeated fatalities.

“You are the first President to show sympathy to those who use the Nithi Bridge. You came and said the deaths at Nithi Bridge should stop,” Mutuma said.

According to the governor, the president has already earmarked billions for the project, which is currently underway.

“Your Excellency, you have put Ksh7 billion into the Nithi Bridge project, which is ongoing, and we thank you. This is something that no other president has done,” he added.

revelation comes amid controversy over the actual amount allocated to the project, with the president and other government officials announcing different amounts.

However, Ruto has shown commitment to the construction of the bridge, noting that the required amount was already in place to construct the bridge to modern standards.

“We have allocated Ksh7 billion to construct the Nithi Bridge to prevent accidents,” Ruto revealed.

“The contractor is already on site and we have done compensation for the acquired land.”

Nithi Bridge, located along the Meru-Embu highway, has for years been linked with fatal road crashes due to its steepness, sharp bends and challenging terrain.

The black spot has claimed hundreds of lives over the years, prompting repeated calls from residents and leaders for a permanent solution.

The ongoing upgrade is expected to improve the road’s alignment and safety features to reduce accidents and enhance transport along the key route linking Meru and neighbouring counties.
