KNEC Announces Guidelines For 2026 Grade 10 School-Based Assessments

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced that schools will have access to the 2026 Grade 10 and vocational level School-Based Assessment (SBA) projects and practicals beginning July 2.

The official circular from the council described the schedule and instructions, urging schools to access the assessment tools through the KNEC Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal.

According to the circular, projects and practicals will be administered in Term 2, while written assessments will be given in Term 3, with scores due by October 31.

“KNEC will upload the Grade 10 and vocational level School Based Assessments on the KNEC CBA Portal,” the council wrote.

“The projects and practicals will be administered in term 2 and the written tests in term 3.”

Principals must log into the CBA portal using school credentials and a one-time password for authentication.

They have been directed to oversee the downloading, administration and submission of learner scores, while teachers will assess students using official rubrics and guidelines provided by KNEC.

The council has also instructed schools to maintain proper records and evidence of learners’ work.

This includes electronic portfolios such as videos, photos and recordings, while encouraging the use of improvised materials from the school environment where necessary.

KNEC has emphasised strict adherence to scoring guidelines, warning that any deviation or submission of fabricated scores will be treated as malpractice and warrant administrative action.

ALSO READ:

“Deviation in scoring, leading to over-awarding or uploading of fictitious scores not based on the learner’s work, shall be considered as malpractice and attract administrative action in line with the provisions of the KNEC Act,” the circular read.

The Grade 10 SBA scores will contribute 15 percent to learners’ final Grade 12 results, with assessments covering STEM, Social Sciences, Arts and Sports, and vocational disciplines.

KNEC specified that though sample SBA tools will be uploaded to guide teachers in assessing ICT and PE, the subjects will only be assessed at the school level.

The guidelines follow KNEC’s directive requiring all principals to register Grade 10 learners on the CBA portal by July 30, a system intended to track learners from as early as Grade 3 through Senior School.

The portal will be used to enrol students in their selected senior school subjects and to manage the administration, assessment and upload of results for the Term 2 Grade 10 SBA projects and practicals.
