Moi University Issues New Statement To Parents, Students

Moi University has taken steps to convince students, parents, and staff that it is steadily recovering.

This comes after months of financial crisis in which the institution dealt with large debts, the threat of an auction, frozen bank accounts, and mounting questions about its future.

In a statement made on Friday, July 3, the university stated that it is fully operational and continues to fulfil its academic objectives.

Despite the financial issues, the college stated that teaching, exams, and graduation programs had not been affected.

“Moi University wishes to give our students, staff, parents and the wider public an unequivocal assurance that the University is open, fully functional, and continues to deliver on its academic mandate,” the University said in a statement signed by its VC Professor Kiplagat Kotut.

This comes after the university’s administration spoke before the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education, explaining its financial situation and outlining reforms being implemented to restore the institution’s viability.

According to the university, the financial difficulties have accumulated over several years and prompted intervention by the government.

It said a comprehensive recovery plan, backed by the Ministry of Education, the University Council and management, is beginning to yield positive results.

Moi University told lawmakers that reforms, including strengthened financial management, enhanced revenue mobilisation, prudent expenditure controls and administrative changes, have helped reduce its revenue deficit while placing the institution on a recovery path.

As part of the assurance, the university said teaching and learning are proceeding as scheduled across all its campuses, and the academic calendar has been fully restored.

Additionally, it noted that examinations are continuing as planned and graduation ceremonies are taking place on schedule.

On fears of staff missing their salaries, Moi University has assured that they are being paid on time as it eyes a return to restore financial stability.

The reassurance follows months of uncertainty at the institution.

In April, internal documents revealed that Moi University was facing the possibility of an auction.

This was after a court battle led to the freezing of its bank accounts through a garnishee order, a move the university warned had crippled its operations.

At the time, the institution cautioned that the financial strain had affected access to essential services, delayed salary payments and threatened learning.

They also warned that students, staff and other stakeholders stood to suffer if the crisis escalated.

The university’s financial woes were further laid bare on Thursday when the Acting VC, Professor Kotut, disclosed to MPs that Moi University had accumulated more than Ksh8 billion in debt and over Ksh10 billion in pending bills, with most of the liabilities dating back to 2014.
