CS Ogamba Breaks Silence On Nyabisase School Violence

Julius Ogamba, the Education Cabinet Secretary, has denounced the violence at Kisii County’s Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School.

Ogamba warned that those responsible for the unrest would face the full weight of the law as the administration sought to address the mounting incidences of indiscipline in schools.

Speaking at an event in Mukurwe-ini, Nyeri County, Ogamba stated that the government will not tolerate acts of violence, including the damage of school property.

He noted that officials were also concerned with tackling the root causes of the turmoil.

“The law will take its full course on that incident,” Ogamba said.

“This time we need to go deeper and establish the root cause of these challenges so that we can resolve them because we do not want a situation where schools are experiencing indiscipline, or students are torching dormitories.”

He went on to say that any students proven to be culpable for the violence would face appropriate consequences.

His remarks come days after chaos erupted at Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School in Bobasi, Kisii County.

Students protested the posting of a new principal, clashing with teachers before setting a dormitory on fire.

Reports indicate that learners opposed the transfer of a new principal from Mochorwa Secondary School, with efforts by teachers to restore calm proving unsuccessful.

Videos circulating online showed students, some with their faces covered, hurling stones as teachers retreated to safety.

The incident adds to a growing wave of unrest witnessed in schools across the country over recent months.

Several schools have experienced strikes, destruction of property, and dormitory fires, forcing some institutions to suspend learning as authorities investigate the causes of the disturbances.

Ogamba said the government is now shifting its focus beyond disciplinary action to identifying the factors driving student unrest, saying lasting solutions will only be achieved by addressing the root causes.
