Gachagua Hits Back At Muturi, Munya Over Claims Of Weakening Other Mt Kenya Parties
Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed claims that his party is weakening smaller opposition outfits.
Gachagua insisted that every political formation has room to compete and grow.
His response followed criticism from Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi, alongside former Meru Governor Peter Munya and Former Embu County Senator Lenny Kivuti.
The tri firmly rejected calls by Gachagua to dissolve regional political parties and fold them into one regional vehicle of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Speaking at his Wamunyoro residence on August 5, Gachagua said concerns that DCP wanted to absorb or eliminate other parties were misplaced and did not reflect his political position.
“I saw my brothers there yesterday, Justin Muturi, Peter Munya and this Lenny Kivuti crying,” Gachagua stated.
“They say this DCP has become too strong, this Riggy G doesn’t want other parties, no, no, no. I think they are misguided. I want many parties.”
Instead, he maintained that Kenya’s opposition would become stronger if several political parties remained active, recruited members, marketed their policies, and competed fairly for public support.
He argued that DCP’s popularity had come through constant grassroots mobilisation.
Gachagua highlighted that he had spent recent weeks holding meetings across counties, including Laikipia, Nyandarua, Kiambu, Kajiado and Narok.
He challenged leaders of other parties to increase their engagement with voters instead of blaming DCP for attracting supporters through regular political campaigns and sustained grassroots outreach.
According to Gachagua, every opposition party should focus on consolidating its support base and selling its agenda to Kenyans because electoral success depends on consistent effort rather than expecting support without campaigning.
“We, as DCP we have become very popular because of our hard work. For example, on Saturday, I held 3 meetings. Nanyuki, Chaka and Rumuruti,” Gachagua stated.
“On Sunday, I held 7 meetings in Nyandarua. Tomorrow I am with people here and others. On Friday, I am in Kiambu town.”

Before adding, “Saturday, I am in Kajiado. Sunday I am in Kiambaa. Monday, I am in Narok. And that is hard work.”
The former Deputy President also invited Muturi, Munya and Kivuti to continue working alongside him.
He stated that they all shared the broader objective of unseating President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.
While welcoming cooperation, Gachagua clarified that competition would only arise when selecting a single presidential candidate, insisting other elective positions would remain open to different political parties.
To defend his stance as a champion for multiparty, he revealed that DCP had previously stepped aside for a DP candidate in Mbeere’s by-election last year after a request from Muturi despite having its own popular aspirant.
Gachagua said he personally spent ten days campaigning in Mbeere alongside his political team to support the DP candidate, arguing the move demonstrated respect for coalition partners.
