Standard Media Journalist Found Dumped Near Masinga Dam After Overnight Abduction
Alex Kiprotich, a senior editor at The Standard Group has been found safe after an abduction on Tuesday night.
According to Standard Group, the Associate Editor was found dumped near Masinga Dam nine hours after he was allegedly abducted along the Gilgil–Nakuru Road by armed men.
The media house, on Tuesday evening announced that Kiprotich was waylaid while traveling to Nakuru.
A press statement released on September 1, 2026, said the incident occurred shortly before 9:20 p.m.
Standard Group CEO Chaacha Mwita strongly condemned the incident, linking it directly to Kiprotich’s investigative reporting and raising concerns over potential state involvement.
Mwita stated that the organization does not believe the timing is a coincidence.
He noted that Kiprotich has been at the forefront of editorial output scrutinizing the conduct of the state, adding that the abduction bears all the hallmarks of a targeted attack on a journalist simply doing his job.
This incident marks the second time in recent months that Kiprotich has been targeted.
On June 27, 2026, armed men in a Toyota Probox attempted to seize him while he was driving to work in Nakuru.
Kiprotich managed to escape by locking his doors and driving away.
According to the Standard Group, internal investigations traced that vehicle to the National Police Service’s Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, though no one was ever held accountable for the attempt.
Holding the Kenyan government directly accountable for the editor’s well-being, the company cited constitutional guarantees on media freedom.

Mwita stated that the Standard Group holds the state responsible for Kiprotich’s safety, life, and anything that happens to him while he remains missing.
He argued that if state involvement is confirmed, it represents an assault on the Constitution of Kenya and on the freedoms of expression and media guaranteed under Articles 33 and 34.
The media house called for the immediate, safe, and unconditional release of Kiprotich, and a prompt and transparent independent investigation into both the abduction and the previous June attempt.
They also demanded for visible protection guarantees for journalists across the country in line with prior public commitments made by President William Ruto.
The organization called on human rights and oversight bodies to join in demanding answers.
Those pointed out include the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, the Law Society of Kenya, the Media Council of Kenya, and the Committee to Protect Journalists.
