Fire Razes Down School Dormitory, Destroys Property Worth Millions In Nandi

A dormitory at Nandi Primary School in Kapsabet was destroyed by fire, resulting in the loss of property of unknown value. The fire also gutted six teachers’ quarters.

The fire is believed to have been caused by the explosion of a gas cylinder in one of the building’s rooms.

The gas leak is suspected to have been caused by the student, and the fire broke out in a small section of the building on Wednesday evening before spreading throughout the structure.

Residents tried to extinguish the fire, but it spread quickly. As a result, they asked for fire extinguishers from the nearby fire station.

Nandi County firefighters responded and extinguished the fire before it spread to adjacent classrooms. Nothing was saved from the inferno.

“We arrived here and assessed the fire and found out that it was consuming a dormitory. We tried to contain the fire in about one hour,” the head of the fire department stated.

Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported.

As students had already resumed school, parents appealed to well-wishers to assist them in reconstructing the building and donating furniture.

At the same time, residents in the area blamed their MP for failing to provide financial assistance to the school.

“Our member of parliament has neglected us for long, we had requested him to build for us a class which he signed a check of two million which he later cancelled,” one of the residents lamented.

“We are requesting him to release emergency funds immediately to help construct this school.”

According to the residents, Nandi Primary is one of the most populated schools in Nandi County. As a result, they call on the government to intervene.

This incident occurred just a month after a fire destroyed a dormitory at Igoji Primary School in Meru on August 12, 2024.
