Police Arrest 6 Goons Being Ferried After Tip in Mavoko Quarries
On Friday, police in Athi River, Machakos County, arrested six suspects and seized three motorcycles from quarries in Mavoko.
According to police, the six men were arrested in the Ngelani area of Athi River East Sub-county after reports of unrest.
Police said the arrested individuals were all suspects who had been on the run before being apprehended.
“The same was effected today 30/08/2024 due to state of unrest within Ngelani quarries,” a police report seen by the AfricasNow read in part.
“Police officers from Mavoko SNP in conjunction with CIPU officers conducted the arrests within the quarries.”
They were arrested for a variety of charges, including threatening to kill and causing a disturbance.
Police said the motorcycles were intercepted and impounded for allegedly transporting goons.
“All the motorcycles were impounded at the same police station. The suspects to appear before court on Monday, September 2, 2024,” the police report stated.
The arrests came months after extortion and gang fights in the quarries raised security concerns.
Some senior police officers in Machakos County had expressed concerns about what they called a high level of impunity and insecurity in Katani and Ngelani quarries located within Mavoko Sub-county.
They claimed cartels operating in the quarries were ferrying goons to fight their opponents, who also make a living off the ‘no man’s land.
Locals and residents had also complained about insecurity in the area, claiming they were living in fear due to frequent attacks by goons who they claimed were mostly ferried from Nairobi.
Eastern regional police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan then issued a warning to local police chiefs to crack down on cartels and suspected criminals.
Napeiyan ordered that suspects be arrested and presented in court in accordance with Kenyan law.
Napeiyan expressed concern about the increased number of sudden deaths reported from the area to local police stations.
He directed his officers to conduct thorough investigations into the causes of the then-rampant ‘sudden’ deaths and put a stop to them immediately.
