Kenyan Athlete Suspended Indefinitely For Unproven Doping

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Friday that Kenyan athlete Emmacutale Anyango had been suspended indefinitely for allegedly doping.

The AIU announced that Anyango, the world’s second-fastest female athlete in 10,000 km races, was banned after testing positive for high levels of testosterone.

Testosterone is widely known for increasing muscle size and strength.

Testosterone also improves aerobic endurance, reduces fat mass, promotes faster recovery from high-intensity exercise, and increases muscular power.

“The AIU has provisionally suspended Emmaculate Anyango Achol (Kenya) for the presence or use of a prohibited Substance, Testosterone and EPO,” read part of a statement by AIU.

According to the AIU’s announcement, the athlete will be suspended until her alleged use of the prohibited substance is heard and determined.

If she is found guilty, Emmanculate will face a four-year ban.

Anyango, who is from Kericho County, has won numerous medals both locally and internationally.

In 2019, she won a silver medal after finishing third in the 3000-metre race at the Under21 African Championship in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

In January 2023, Emmaculate won the Discovery Kenya Cross Country Championship. In the same year, she won the 10,000 meters at the Meeting Gala Fernanda Ribeiro in Portugal.

At the start of this year, the athlete competed in the Valencia Ibercaja competition, becoming only the second woman in history to complete a 10km race in under 29 minutes.

The most recent decision comes as a huge blow to the first rising, young athlete who had begun making waves across the continent and even globally.

Nonetheless, Anyango joins a long list of Kenyan athletes who have been barred by the global watchdog for allegedly using banned substances to improve performance.

In June of this year, the AIU suspended four Kenyan athletes for varying amounts of time due to allegations of using banned substances.

The AIU confirmed that Sophy Jepchirchir and Kemei would be banned for three and four years, respectively, along with Ibrahim Wachira.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Kosimbei was banned for three years after a laboratory test revealed the presence of a prohibited substance, trimetazidine.

“The Athlete has not demonstrated that the Anti-Doping Rule Violations were not intentional. Therefore, the mandatory period of ineligibility is a period of Ineligibility of four (4) years,” AIU announced.
