MATWANA CULTURE: Meet Nairobi’s Latest Matatu With Starlink WiFi, Comfy Chairs

Have you ever ridden in a luxurious matatu minibus that made you feel like you were on a plane? Hold your breath.

Meet the “Phenomenal,” a public service vehicle (PSV) that will make its debut on Friday, 25.

The sleek matatu will be decorated with graffiti-style artwork, custom designs, flashy lights, and onboard entertainment to attract crowds.

Surprisingly, the minibus will be the first matatu to have a Starlink wifi satellite installed on top, complete with a kit, allowing passengers to enjoy a fast internet connection while traveling to their destination.

Travellers will be able to access wifi at speeds of up to 200Mbps for free. WiFi will also be used to stream live HD music.

The masterpiece, which is essentially art on wheels, was created by Maze Njoroge, who has designed numerous matatus, including cyberpunk and restoration matatus, which were popular in Nairobi’s dusty streets.

The ‘Phenomenal’ was built by Central Farmers Garage (CFG) and will operate on the Ngong route for NTVRS Sacco.

The owners hired pimping experts to help them achieve the level of class they desired. Martin Ojiambo did the portraits of the glitzy green matatu, and Jaramba created the customized lights.

According to Branden Marshall, an administrator at Matatu Galore and Matatu culture expert, the vehicle cost around Ksh10 million.

Branden stated that Phenomenal will be a one-of-a-kind matatu. It is expected to win awards due to its advanced technological features.

Furthermore, the 33-seater will have custom rims to highlight its sleek design. Music will be a major feature of the matatu, with high-end 18-inch subwoofers that are extremely expensive.

While matatu culture has evolved, technological advancements are being implemented to reflect rapid technological change.
