Ruto Orders Tourism Board To Turn Away ‘Poor’ Tourists And Allow ONLY Big Spenders

President William Ruto has advised the tourist hotspots in Laikipia County to limit the number of hikers entering their areas.

The President stated that Laikipia County has the best tourist product, and hence it only deserves premium and high-quality guests who will bring in good money.

On Saturday, November 9, he spoke as part of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy’s 20th anniversary celebrations in Laikipia County.

“There are many backpackers, many people who roam around. They bring down our facilities, and we don’t get much money from them. I think we should avoid those people, we should tell them to go to other places,” Ruto advised.

According to the President, these types of tourists are reducing the quality of tourism in Laikipia County.

The county has numerous tourist attractions, including the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which is set against the backdrop of Mount Kenya and straddles the equator.

“There are many places they can go, but for a premium destination like Laikipia, we want to get top dollar for it,” Ruto urged.

The reserve is distinguished out for its spectacular safari experiences, stunning natural beauty, and significant conservation success.

Ol Pejeta is well-known as an innovator in the global conservation community.

Ol Pejeta is continuously looking for new ways to achieve its conservation aims, from pioneering funding initiatives like the nearby Mount Kenya Wildlife Estate to building a K-9 unit to help its armed rangers.

The president has repeatedly stated his desire to expand tourist numbers in Kenya.

Ruto has long advocated for the promotion of the country’s numerous attractions, such as its wildlife, the Great Rift Valley, coastal beaches, and savannah grasslands.

President Ruto’s statements came as Kenya aims to attract three million visitors this year, with a revenue objective of Ksh700 billion.

Furthermore, Ruto hopes to draw five million people annually. This is an increase from about two million visitors, who will contribute Ksh353 billion to the economy in 2022.

During the event, President Ruto commended the county on its efforts to pay taxes, adding that their compliance has allowed him to continue with developments not only in the county but throughout the country.

“Because you paid that money, I was able to hire 750 teachers for the children of Laikipia last year, and I will be hiring 300 more next year because of your efforts,” the president lauded the county leadership.
