‘Those Are Fraudsters!’ – KNEC Declines Any Changes In KCSE Results

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has warned Kenyans to be aware of scammers offering to amend their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam results.

KNEC issued a brief statement on Thursday, December 5, dismissing claims that the national tests were being modified in favor of a few pupils who had paid for the services.

While clarifying the information, KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere said that the documents shared online purporting to invite students interested in changing their grades were fraudulent.

The examination body was forced to clarify the situation after rumors surfaced that marks were being manipulated during KCSE exam marking.

According to the flagged post, a group of people purportedly collaborated with an official at the KNEC headquarters to help change grades for certain pupils.

“Grade changing is currently ongoing. We have partnered with an official from KNEC on consultancy,” read part of the fake post. While responding to the post, KNEC wrote, “Scam alert, beware of fraudsters and stay alert.”

KNEC’s declaration comes a week after examiners began marking KCSE tests taken on November 22.

The Ministry of Education recently said that marking would be completed by the end of December.

However, the marking procedure has been beset by controversy, with the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) threatening to pull its instructors from the marking centers.

Speaking on Thursday, November 28, Sam Opondo, a KUPPET officer representing the Siaya Branch, claimed that the examination committee humiliated and threatened a group of teachers.

He revealed that the organization had received indications that a group of teachers were being removed from marking centers for engaging in exam misconduct.

“Concerning what we consider as unmitigated mistreatment of our members who are involved in the marking of KCSE exams 2024,” Opondo told the press.

“Some have been retired without reason, others are ejected from marking centres like criminals.”

“If KNEC wants to continue with this improper humiliation of our teachers, we are ready to take action, which includes calling our teachers to boycott the marking of KCSE exams,” Opondo added.
