KNEC Announces Grade 9 National Examinations Plans For 2025

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) will begin delivering questionnaires to Grade 9 pupils as they enter senior school in order to learn about their interests and future plans.

In a statement issued on Thursday, December 19, KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere revealed that, in addition to the success tests already administered at grade 9, students will now complete questionnaires to shape their future.

“Apart from achievement assessments, we will also administer a questionnaire to Grade 9 learners to explore their interests and other personal attributes that will speak to the kind of pathways and tracks that they will pursue in Senior School,” Njengere informed.

The body’s goal is to ensure that a student only selects the course they choose for their future and that nothing is imposed on them.

The CEO was addressing a stakeholder meeting on the implementation of Competency-Based Education (CBE).

Njengere asked stakeholders to trust teachers’ abilities to deliver School Based Assessments (SBAs), which they have been doing since 2019.

“Since 2019, teachers have been administering these SBAs and I can assure you that we’ve been getting a normal curve, which shows that the teachers are very objective and professional,” Njengere assured.

As the country prepares for the grade 9 evaluation next year, KNEC has organized a conference to familiarize instructors with the new national assessment methodology.

The teachers were selected from 235 schools that took part in the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) pilot program last year.

The seminar’s goal is to obtain input from instructors, school administrators, and students, using a learner questionnaire to assess academic preferences and personality qualities.

“This assessment is an essential tool for identifying each learner’s potential and guiding them toward a path that suits their interests and skills,” Anne Ngatia, KNEC’s Director of Research and Innovation reiterated.

KJSEA intends to play an important role in guiding students’ future professional prospects.

This move is part of a larger effort to ensure that the education system is better matched with learners’ strengths, skills, abilities, and goals.

After grade 9, also known as Junior Secondary School, students will move on to Senior Secondary School (SSS), where they will choose their career choice.
