Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga faced a new challenge on Wednesday, as Seychelles named a new candidate for the Africa Union Commission Chairperson (AUC) job.

This occurred at a time when Djibouti and Somalia had also announced their own candidates.

The Seychelles Foreign Affairs Department announced that the East African country would support Vincent Meriton.

Meriton has previously served as the country’s Vice President and Foreign Minister.

“The Foreign Affairs Department wishes to announce that the Government of Seychelles has endorsed the candidature of Vincent Meriton for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) in the election scheduled to take place in February 2025,” a statement from Seychelles government read in part.

Seychelles stated that Meriton was the best-suited candidate since he has spent his political career supporting Seychelles’ position on the Blue Economy on a global scale.

If elected, he promised to enhance the execution rate of the Commission’s executive decisions.

This would be accomplished by removing impediments to implementation and encouraging responsibility and compliance.

Raila Odinga was the first individual to express interest in the seat, which will become vacant in February 2025.

Somalia then nominated former Foreign Affairs Minister Fawzia Yusuf Adam to face Raila.

Djibouti then nominated their Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mahmoud Youssouf, for the same position.

The seat is held on a rotational basis, and it is now the turn of the East African Region to nominate a candidate to succeed Moussa Faki from Chad.
