Auditor General Raises Eyebrow On The Ksh.3B Proposed Reduction Meant For Flood Mitigation Budget

Auditor General raises worry over projected Ksh.3 billion cut in flood mitigation budget.

Auditor General Nancy Gathungu has issued a warning about the government’s proposal to cut the budget for flood reaction by more than Ksh.3 billion.

Gathungu, who spoke before the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee on Monday, says an assessment of the budget forecasts shows insufficient funding for rehabilitation programs.

These include flood mitigation and food security, at a time when the government requires cash to recover from flood-related destruction projected to cost more than Ksh.80 billion.

“The review of the 2024/2025 budget estimates indicates inadequate allocation for recovery programmes like flood mitigation and food security, signalling potential issues with other competing priorities and underestimation of envisaged risks,” said Gathungu.

“The aggregated budget has been reduced by about 955 billion from the previous year’s estimated expenditure of 4.4 billion in sampled programmes which have indicated in the table on flood mitigation and food security initiatives.”

The Auditor General has also expressed worry over the proposal to lower her budget by more than Ksh.270 million, stating that the move will have an impact on operations, including audit report preparation.
