Hillo is the same mining field that Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki closed in March following fatal conflicts between communities over mining rights.
residents claim that despite the government’s efforts to shut it down, security personnel have allowed mining to continue and have collected bribes from residents.
Three people were killed two months ago after a conflict between different factions at the mine.
According to sources familiar with the case, tensions rose inside the gold mine due to miscommunication among miners, which developed into intergroup fights.
Marsabit County Commissioner Norbert Komora then ordered the mine closed and gave the miners 24 hours to leave.
The government subsequently initiated an investigation into the events at the mine that caused the deaths.
