Police In Homabay Have Identified And Uprooted Over 40 Acres of Bhang

Police in Homa Bay have intensified their crackdown on bhang planted in Gwasi hills, uprooting and destroying over 40 acres of the outlawed crop so far in ongoing operations within the forest.

Gwasi Forest is a gazetted water tower that spans over 6000 acres in Suba South Constituency.

Over 40 acres of bhang were discovered on the hill during an ongoing operation led by Suba Sub County Deputy County Commissioner Sebastian Okiring.

The most recent discovery occurred on Saturday when officers discovered 5 acres of bhang after receiving a tip from members of the public who revealed to authorities that the illegal crops were planted in various parts of the escarpment.

It took the officers several hours to reach the fields. Okiring claims that they have conducted operations in various parts of Gwasi Hills over the last two weeks, discovering over 40 acres of the illegal crop.

The DCC claims to have established two camps at the foot of the Gwasi hills (Kinchororio and Kithereka areas) with the goal of clearing all illegal crops planted throughout the hills.

He says they are collaborating with other government agencies and non-state actors to begin massive tree planting in areas where the bhang has been uprooted.

He added that they are also collaborating with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) to establish camps in the Gwasi hills to protect them from encroachment.
