Family’s Distress Call To The Kenyan Gov’t For Kin Arrested In Egypt
A family has come forward to urge government action after a relative was arrested in Egypt.
Speaking to journalists, the family asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to help them secure the release of their daughter, who they alleged had been detained by Egyptian officials since May 8.
According to the family, their relative was arrested as a result of expired immigration documentation, along with two other Kenyans, during a crackdown launched by the North African country’s authorities.
The lady in question is said to have moved to the country in 2018 when she was supposed to join a relative and work as a housekeeper.
However, she ended up dating a Tanzanian man and had a child with him in 2019.
Later that year, he flew back to his own country, leaving the woman and her child in Egypt.
According to the family, the youngster has been ill for some time, causing the mom to provide for her child’s necessities without formal employment.
Additionally, the lady’s visa is said to have expired in February of this year. This drove her to live in dread and continuously use strategies to avoid the authorities.
Her family’s efforts to raise the finances needed to bring her back to the country were failed, raising barely Ksh 2,000.
“I have no money to buy tickets for them since I do domestic work in the city. We have set up a WhatsApp group where my friends have helped me raise only Sh2,000. I fear for her and her daughter,” said the family, adding that she will need at least Ksh200,000 to take care of all the costs.
This is not the first time Kenyans have been imprisoned in a foreign country with no way of returning home.
In April, two Kenyans were featured in Taiwanese news for being pushed into hard labor after being offered high-paying jobs before departing the country.
